Review - Marvel Puzzle Quest

Are you cool? I mean really, are you cool? If you answered yes, you must be playing Marvel Puzzle Quest. If you said no, you are just another sheep playing "Candy Crush" BAA BAA sheep go drink your Hi-goat and play with your candy. Marvel Puzzle Quest is one in a long line of 'puzzle quest' game that follow the tried and true 'match three things' formula that is so popular today.  Confused? Yes? Do not panic! Everything will become clear. Lets take a look at the game play. So you start out on the map screen where you select the enemy you will face. A nice little comic will play and then you battle. So each character has different powers relating to different colours. So if I collect three red symbols Iron Man attacks, but if I get pink Black Widow will attack. Characters also have special moves which can be performed by spending the accumulated coloured symbols. The enemy and yourself have life points which when reduced to zero res

Two fun The Last of Us easter eggs

If you follow games at all you are probably aware of a game called 'The Last of Us' which came out for the PS3 a few months ago.  For the uninitiated among you 'The Last of Us' follows the journey of a middle aged man and a teenage girl across the USA after it has been decimated by an apocalyptic outbreak.  If you have a PS3 run to the store and buy this game... I'm not kidding... GO! Proof of the desolation... shoes hanging from a wire! Should I shoot the toys with a gun or an arrow... Anyhoo, while I was exploring this 'world' I came across an interesting site in a kid's room... This is Jak and Daxter from... well.... the game series Jak and Daxter!  These guys are really cute... I wonder if you can buy them in reality. My second little easter egg is kinda meta... there is a playstation in a store you can hide in while playing as 'Ellie' the young female protagonist.  I notice that this playstation is an odd model or ma

What's the deal with virtual collectible card games?

So I've been looking around on the play store to find some good ways to waste my time and I have found a ton of virtual collectible card games.  I've played a lot of them and they are fun... you can check my previous blog about the baseball game it is a pretty cool concept. Now I have found an app called 'History Attacks'  it is yet another card battle game but this one uses a slot type action to give you a bonus when attacking. The tactic is to use power ups and special attacks from your cards in relation to 'poker hands.'  A certain card may have the ability to add cards to a straight you are building, while some other history cards in your deck may use a special attack only when you get a poker hand like a 'straight.' The cards also have an elemental alignment which will make them stronger or weaker against other elements. This makes the tactics quite sophisticated as you have to figure out whether to try for certain poker hands or not as well as bu

Review - Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - A Painful Lesson in Blocking

Slashy - Slashy The latest installation in the Metal Gear  franchise is a game about Raiden, a cyborg ninja, who runs around cutting stuff up. Raiden, if you are not familiar, was first introduced in Metal Gear Solid 2 as the game's main protagonist and later shows up in Metal Gear Solid 4 as his cyborg self.  Revengeance takes place about 4 years (in the game world) after Metal Gear Solid 4 and it appears that Raiden is a lot more robotic than I remember him.  He is off to save the world after the security job he is on goes a bit screwy... pretty standard stuff.  Throughout the game we get some insights into Raiden and he, despite being mostly robot, becomes a bit more human in our eyes.  Yup that's right folks the Tin Man does have a heart after all... Cut to pieces... yummy! On to the game...  The game for all intents and purposes is a hack and slash game. There are some stealth elements reminiscent of the  Metal Gear  franchise as a whole but they are pretty muc

9 innings 2013

I found this great app it's one part baseball game and one part card collecting game. The action is pretty simple. You are given a stack of your favourite team's cards to start and from there you can play the game to earn points to get better cards. It may seem quite juvenile but the sports part of the game is very strong.  The designers of the game smartly omitted what would likely be the hardest part on a mobile device: running and fielding.  one of the things I don't like is that your leveling up of a card can fail. This can be very annoyingas you will have to keep paying out more and more of your precious points! overall a great app for android. pros: good baseball action, fast paced, free cons: card collecting is slow and too random, power ups can be annoying

Child of Eden - A Game Review

The Box Art Child of Eden is a visually interesting, though not particularly stunning game. The premise is fairly simple: Shoot crap. It's a rail shooter, which means you are stuck in one linear place moving back and forth shooting crap.  The interesting part is that when you shoot things it has a drum beat, that drum beat accents the game's own music at times which adds a cool dimension to playing. The game makes use (on the PS3 release) of the PS move motion controller. I only used the move controls as I thought they would allow for the most fun experience.  The move provides a decent level of control although at times I felt them to be sluggish and a bit of an impediment... then again I may have simply been too close to the screen. The story is kind of a bit weird. There is a girl named 'Lumi' who apparently needs to be saved so we have to shoot strange geometric shapes in Space in order to uh... rescue her?  Ok so I am not really very sure on that one. There
