There is no place like Wimpy's Diner

Popeye likes spinach and Wimpy likes burgers... given my immense physical prowess it is obvious to see who I have more in common with... Menu showcasing their signature oblong Burger patty We went to Wimpy's on an unforgiving late January Friday lunch and had a great meal and a pleasant dining experience.  It had been a couple of years since I ate at Wimpy's and it was a fine time to com back! I actually have fond memories of this place as it is a place that my father loves and it always brings a smile to my face to go here with him. Location is everything in the world and this place is located in a good place just up at the top of Lundy's Lane Niagara Falls, Canada beside the outlet mall. Where the people at? Today, however, they were not being killed with customers. In fact, we were the only ones there!   It was OK though I actually enjoy being the only diners sometimes as you can feel like you are there to seriously judge and inspect the food and if you ar...

Food at The Traders

During my recent trip to The Traders I sampled just about everything they had to offer except in-room dining. The grill and steak house was offering specials relating to mushrooms: specifically wild ones. Coming to dvd mushrooms gone wild... unrated! The land menu meaning anything on land... well almost anything A lovely olive roll French onion soup.  The soup was very tasty but the cheese was a bit mild and tasteless. The portion size was huge and I felt full and a bit bored by the time I reached the bottom. Cream of mushroom soup.  The mushroom soup was a very normal puree mushroom soup. It was not bad just nothing special - a very fresh soup. Steak and mushrooms.  A sirloin steak with sauted wild mushrooms and spinach. The side was potatoes au gratin (scalloped or cheese potatoes for those not initiated). The steak went very well with the mushrooms and was cooked to a perfect medium. Ribeye steak.  By far the star of the even...

The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf - restaurant review

Do you want to pig out on pork? Do you enjoy tucked away out of the way places? Do you like Bangsar? If you answered yes then you better mosey on by this place in Bangsar Village. The location is a bit odd as you can enter through the Village Grocer super market. But the atmosphere is quite nice. I'll call it homey-chic as its both cool and homey. My party was greeted at the door by a nice energetic lady who was taking names and generally trying to get the crowded seating organised in the small venue. She was nice enough to seat us at a table without high chairs as one of the party had a very short skirt. The pigs menu for the daytime only... before the wolves come out. The hours if you are interested A sample of a few of the illustrations in the menu. Pork meatballs. These were fresh and moist with a light and tasty tomato sauce.  A bizarre choice but here is fish and chips. This was apparently very well fried, crispy but not oily. Bacon...

Lakeview Cafe at The Heritage - Is the grill worth it?

I was really concerned about going to lakeview as they are one of the few restaurants at The Heritage without the word "grill" in their name but a very prominent grill in their menu. Also they are not really in view of the lake... so false advertising. The service was good and the staff were attentive and polite. I went as a party of three and we sampled three different areas of the menu. We had  Chicken Beryani, Filet Steak, and Shish Taouk. For drinks, I braved their ice lemon tea, the others drank coke. The iced tea looks weird but it had a nice balance of tea and sweetness. Chicken beriyani smelled divine with a nice blend of spices and fragrance The filet steak was substandard at best. Ordered medium it came on the wellest end of well done and was tough and chewy. The saving grace of this steak was that it was very well seasoned and very reasonably priced for the portion size. The grilled vegetables were very oily and are recommended to be skipped....

Like a g-wrap like a g-wrap A review of McDonald's G-wrap

With great zeal and enthusiasm I marched to my local McD's here in Malaysia eager to try the newest taste sensation - the G-wrap.  The G-wrap gets its 'g' from its evil step-brother the GCB.  If you are outside Malaysia or just not up on your fast food (for shame) the GCB is a Grilled Chicken Burger. Basically they take the fattiest part of the chicken(the thigh) slather it in oil, griddle it in more oil, then leave the soggy chicken skin on (for added oil). The uhhh succulent 'grilled' to perfection chicken is thrown on a sesame seed bun with some garlicy secret GCB sauce and a salad mix (lettuce, carrots, leaves).  If that wasn't 'gud' enough they jumped on the wrap bandwagon (they get things late here) with the G-wrap. So what is a G-Wrap? Its the GCB in a wrap instead of a bun and it costs a little more. Why does it cost more? Why, because fat idiots like me want to write review blogs! If you like the GCB you will like the G-wrap. Soo please stop r...

Marche at The Curve - Fine Dining or a Fine Mess

Today, I traversed over to the curve as I'm bankrolling a trip to see David Guetta in concert on December 14th. Feeling bored I decided to try something new... Well new for me in Malaysia... and that is Marche. For the unitiated in the crowd, Marche is something like an upper scale food court buffet. For malaysians think of a mat sallet style nasi kandar. This month is an Oktoberfest promotion, which I'm delighted to say only happens at night. I smartly went for lunch. I got an extensive fare and for the most part it was good albiet exspensive. I had been recommended by a student to try the steak which was quoted as "amazing." I will put my review with the pictures. Remember to keep your card or they charge you a sealclobbering RM200. The first item of sampling is the cream of mushroom soup. The soup was made of puree mushrooms and cream. It was not too heavy but a bit grainy. The flavour was nice and not too rich. The second item was sauteed mixed...

eat healthy... eat plastic!?

So, the other day i went to 'Esquire Kitchen' which is a local chain restaurant(look it up if you don't know) with locations throughout the KL area and beyond.  Feeling particularly healthy I ordered my favourite 'hong kong gai lan' and when I was about half-way through I found a largeish piece of red plastic from a bag. I imagine they had ripped the bag open and that piece went through the proverbial rinse. I was agast and appalled and various other negativities starting with 'a' and quickly brought the matter to the waitstaff's attention. Remarkably, based on every other experience, they were also appalled and immediately took away the food and erased the dish from my bill.  I was shocked because when I have seen bugs in food or wrong orders if I had even looked at the food I was likely paying for it. These ladies had no problem scrapping the dish and keeping the standard high. Bravo Esquire, kudos and kudos again.... you have earned the right ...

They will use anything for protein these days

In my travels around South East Asia I have seen some really odd food.  People here eat a variety of strange things which is great as it allows me to explore a different culture and gives more flavour (haha) to living abroad. Would you eat a Jawa? Yesterday I found a very very disturbing food item on a local menu and I would like to start a petition banning the senseless slaughter of the elegant and noble creatures used to make this 'delicacy.'  Now I know what you are thinking shark fin right?  Hells to the no.  Dolphin?  no way Jose!  I am talking about the merciless harvesting of Jawas to make JAWA FRIED RICE!!! These little cloaked guys are great for the environment... I mean they salvaged every scrap of space crap that fell on that planet in Star Wars and they served for one heck of a plot point to coincidentally put Luke together with C3PO and R2D2.  Yeah I think we need a telethon for this... Another thing does bother me though...
