So I've been watching the latest season of The Xfactor (the singing competition) and realised that having a brutally honest judge like Simon Cowell is pretty much the best thing about the show. I know what you are thinking 'Adam, you are about a dozen years late in this revelation he was on a little show called American Idol.' Well I know and I am just getting warmed up.
Nowadays the airways are full of shows with these blunt Brits speaking their minds and crushing the spirts of those left in their collective wakes. I think Simon Cowell is possibly the most endearing of the lot as he has had quite a bit of staying power thus far on Idol and the Xfactor. Thinking about 'talent shows' I have to bring up Piers Morgan who was on numerous 'reality' shows a few years ago and now hosts a show on CNN. Morgan was arrogant in his 'reality show' persona which I think worked very well: he is a snob and we are all benwath him. Next up is Gordon Ramsay celebrity chef and reality show host. Ramsay this year has 3 shows out: Hotel Hell, Kitchen Nightmares, and Hell's Kitchen. Ramsay is foul-mouthed, arrogant and a perfectionist. He also seems unafraid to call anyone out on any of his shows.
So where does our obsession come from? Personally, I think when then say something snarky it is often something we the viewer would never have the 'balls' to say. Another thing all three of my examples have in common is that each is highly successful in their field and who doesn't like a winner? Lastly I think everyone likes a bad boy... I mean Fonzie wasn't popular for nothing. Don't get me wrong they aren't horrible, well unless you mean horribly entertaining! *drum trap*
So, now I am wondering. If we are importing these jerks, what the Hell is North America giving back?
"horribly entertaining" nice combination :)
ReplyDeleteI always think it's just the magical power of being expose to the tv cams and the audience that matters in this whole thing...and the JUDGE is basically just keeping the thing going on with appropriate* reactions!
Well at the very least its all good to watch if you like that sort of thing
Deleteehem ehem...actually I don't watch them regularly!more precisely speaking, i don't have tv to watch these kind of programs...my statement!/opinion which i made/mentioned above was based on watching couple of successful and extremely failed! performances on these shows!
Deletethere you go! :D
Who's gonna believe that? NO ONE!
