Today I was reading about Oxford's 'word of the year' and apparently there are many words of the year out there. First fishy thing is that it seems to be up in the air whether or not Oxford dictionaries actually endorses this word. The LA Times reported it was from Oxford, while wikipedia says the Oxford list isn't from Oxford but from an employee! Strange to say the least, but I don't care I trust Oxford so I'm only gonna focus on them official or not!
There are also two different words of the year: one American and one British. Do we really need two versions of the latest hip word or phrase. Apparently we do.
Onto the American word: GIF.
WTF is this actually a word? Well sort of. It seems that people have started to use this word as a verb ass in "I'm gonna GIF that freak out Adam just had." personally I have never seen this usage, Hell I never really heard anyone talking about GIFs in years so what do I know. According to the article I read this "word" beat out "Higgs Boson," "YOLO," "Superstorm," and "super PAC." Two of the words had SUPER in them... how is it even possible they were beat? They are SUPER!!!
The British word is just as foreign: Omnishambles.
OK the Brits get props for using my favourite prefix "omni" which as we all know makes every single word exactly 10,000% cooler. So what is an Omnishamble? well it is apparently a situation where everything goes wrong and is helped down by a series of poor decisions, mismanagement and blunders. Anything that involves blundering is OK in my books. What words did omnishambles beat? Good Question. Omnishambles beat out "GIF"(take that American Engilsh), "Euroggeden," "mommy/mummy porn," and "Mobot." I think Euroggeden is pretty awesome but of course it is no omni and making fun of Europe's finances is kind of too easy. Mommy/mummy porn is a pretty funny term but honestly who in the Hell wants those two concepts put together?
Well there you have it. 2012 has given us some interesting words but are they really the best? I guess time will tell and if not there is always next year!
