TESOL vs CELTA... Which is the best?

There is still a lot of debate as to which of these two certifications is best for teaching abroad and I have noticed a lot of elitism for both certification. Before I toss myself in the debate I think it is best to clarify the terms. CELTA What is it? CELTA is the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (wait shouldn't it be CTESOL then?) which is endorsed by Cambridge ESOL and is only available via endorsed centres.  In many countries it is offered by the British Council and surprisingly the price varies where you take it. What do you learn?  Long story short you learn to teach.  The material is broken down into five sections and goes through the basics of language learning with some focus on the CELTA methods for learning and preparing lessons. There is no formal exam for CELTA just written assignments and practical teaching of 6 hours. At the end participants will be given a "pass" "pass A" or "pass B" TESOL Wh...

Back to Hadramout Mamalket Restaurant - does it pay to go back?

A long while ago I had a very disappointing experience at the Hadramout Mamalket restaurant at The Heritage, then I returned for yet another disappointment.  Tonight is the last chance and we shall see whether we get a thumbs up or another look of disdain. I went to the place with a couple of girls and we all brought our appetites.  The order was the mixed grill, couscous libby, and hummus. This all seemed good until we had to wait more than 15 minutes to see drinks and another 40 without any food at all. Kind of interesting another patron ordered food from a competing restaurant and received it after about 15 minutes. It seems that guy had the right idea! After an hour we enquired about our food. As it turns out despite the server repeating our order twice,  the order was never actually taken. So we walked out. Very rarely I have walked out but these guys really pushed my patience too far. In closing, we went for some fast food, but our question was answered it def...

A cautionary tale about chicken at giant supermarket

If you have ever been to a supermarket in Malaysia then you are probably familiar with the meat and fish being displayed in metal bucket things filled with ice.  If you know me then you know I can stand that as I find it unhygienic. I have, unfortunately, determined that the chicken that does not sell off the ice just gets shrink wrapped so you are stuck with ice chicken no matter what you do! These days I sniff all the meat I pick from the ice and if necessary rub it for slimey-ness. Today I found a sickening sight at giant... No not that... something even more horrifying than Jamie Oliver! Do you notice something strange about the chicken keel right in the middle? The meat is actually GREEN... GREEEEEENN!!!!! This is enough to make me a vegetarian again! In summary. Do not trust any meat lying around anywhere.  Always sniff the meat and for the love of god don't buy it if it is green!

Review - Marvel Puzzle Quest

Are you cool? I mean really, are you cool? If you answered yes, you must be playing Marvel Puzzle Quest. If you said no, you are just another sheep playing "Candy Crush" BAA BAA sheep go drink your Hi-goat and play with your candy. Marvel Puzzle Quest is one in a long line of 'puzzle quest' game that follow the tried and true 'match three things' formula that is so popular today.  Confused? Yes? Do not panic! Everything will become clear. Lets take a look at the game play. So you start out on the map screen where you select the enemy you will face. A nice little comic will play and then you battle. So each character has different powers relating to different colours. So if I collect three red symbols Iron Man attacks, but if I get pink Black Widow will attack. Characters also have special moves which can be performed by spending the accumulated coloured symbols. The enemy and yourself have life points which when reduced to zero res...

Urbanfresh at Setia City Mall

I recently made the unfathomable trip from my home to Setia City Mall in Setia Alam Malaysia. I was, of course, in search of interesting shopping and imported food. Some background. For those of you living in Setia Alam congrats on picking a beautiful place to live; however, my condolences as you all live in the bloody boonies!  Setia City is an INCREDIBLY nice mall with a fine selection of shops and F&B outlets, but unfortunately no game stores or Chilis (TGIFridays? Really? Ugh.) I stumbled upon a grocery store that looked quite up-scale and my import sense started tingling. What a classy place with words like Urban and fresh right in the name it must be good. The pillar says "fresh food" for seal's sake so come on! They had this interesting apple display going on at the front of the store.  This is actually a cardboard tree with apples all around it. It is a neat idea... I just hope the apples didn't grow on cardboard! The fresh fruit and veg...

Like a g-wrap like a g-wrap A review of McDonald's G-wrap

With great zeal and enthusiasm I marched to my local McD's here in Malaysia eager to try the newest taste sensation - the G-wrap.  The G-wrap gets its 'g' from its evil step-brother the GCB.  If you are outside Malaysia or just not up on your fast food (for shame) the GCB is a Grilled Chicken Burger. Basically they take the fattiest part of the chicken(the thigh) slather it in oil, griddle it in more oil, then leave the soggy chicken skin on (for added oil). The uhhh succulent 'grilled' to perfection chicken is thrown on a sesame seed bun with some garlicy secret GCB sauce and a salad mix (lettuce, carrots, leaves).  If that wasn't 'gud' enough they jumped on the wrap bandwagon (they get things late here) with the G-wrap. So what is a G-Wrap? Its the GCB in a wrap instead of a bun and it costs a little more. Why does it cost more? Why, because fat idiots like me want to write review blogs! If you like the GCB you will like the G-wrap. Soo please stop r...

ESL Tips: Advise vs Advice

Here is a video I put together to explain the difference between 'advice' and 'advise'

Caesar Salad with Tomatoes - I don't approve.

I am allergic to fish but I love Caesar salad even though it often contains the wonderful essence of anchovies.  One thing I can't accept was the inclusion of tomatoes. I couldn't find tomatoes in any of the top recipe pages on google but I didn't search for "caesar salad with tomatoes" but then again what right-minded person would!

Marche at The Curve - Fine Dining or a Fine Mess

Today, I traversed over to the curve as I'm bankrolling a trip to see David Guetta in concert on December 14th. Feeling bored I decided to try something new... Well new for me in Malaysia... and that is Marche. For the unitiated in the crowd, Marche is something like an upper scale food court buffet. For malaysians think of a mat sallet style nasi kandar. This month is an Oktoberfest promotion, which I'm delighted to say only happens at night. I smartly went for lunch. I got an extensive fare and for the most part it was good albiet exspensive. I had been recommended by a student to try the steak which was quoted as "amazing." I will put my review with the pictures. Remember to keep your card or they charge you a sealclobbering RM200. The first item of sampling is the cream of mushroom soup. The soup was made of puree mushrooms and cream. It was not too heavy but a bit grainy. The flavour was nice and not too rich. The second item was sauteed mixed...

Breakfast Spot

Here is our favourite breakfast spot. The place to be for Nasi Lemak Tosai Girls!? Oh well... good fun anyways

Breaking my back just to know why I went there... A review of the Killers live at Sepang!

The Killers are one of the more critically and commercially successful acts of the last decade, so it will come as no shock to know that they held a well attended concert here in Malaysia a few weeks ago.  I work at the speed of sound here... only two weeks late! First thing to note about this concert it was EXPENSIVE (though not expansive *rimshot*)  The ticket was RM 238 which is not really a heck of a lot ($70USD) but when you account for having just gone to the Good Vibes the month before for only RM 168 ($55USD) it seems ridiculous. owwww my wallet This was an all-ages show, which I have vowed never to attend after the horrors of working an all-ages Good Charlotte concert *shudder* about ten years ago. This set of terms and conditions cracked me up... you can't see it unfortunately but some douche kept shining a laser pointer at the sign. Ladies and Gentlemen - NO BOMBS  I'm not gonna lie, the girls I went to the concert with were definitely enjoying th...
